An Israeli military base, reportedly storing nuclear-capable missiles, was hit by a missile launched by Hamas on October 7, according to a report by The New York Times. Although the allegedly nuclear missiles themselves were unharmed, the strike ignited a fire near storage facilities and sensitive weaponry. According to the report, which is supported by a ‘visual analysis,’ the missile did not directly hit its target, instead landing in a small ravine near the missile facility, yet it was close enough for base personnel to quickly establish a firebreak to prevent the fire reaching the base proper.

The targeted base, Sdot Micha, located 25 miles northeast of Gaza, is believed to contain at least some of Israel’s symbolically named ‘Jericho missiles.’ While Israel has never officially confirmed their possession of nuclear weapons, the matter has been something of an open secret since the 1960s. It is unclear if Hamas were deliberately targeting what they thought to be Israel’s nuclear weapons, or whether it was merely part of the general assault. Neither Hamas nor Israeli Defense Forces have commented on the claims.
