Tbilisi Walks: Rustaveli Avenue

Take a leisurely stroll along Rustaveli Avenue, the central thoroughfare of Tbilisi, named after the medieval Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli. Stretching approximately 1.5 kilometers, lined with plane trees, it connects Liberty Square to Rustaveli Square.

This historic avenue witnessed the birth of Georgia's first museum, opera, and elite hotel, evolving over time into a hub of cultural, political, and architectural significance. Adorned with numerous government, public, cultural, and commercial buildings, the avenue showcases architectural gems like the Parliament building, the Georgian National Museum, the Opera and Ballet Theater, and the 'Gruzugol' building, among others.

Rustaveli Avenue has been a witness to key moments in Georgia's history, including the tragedy of April 9, 1989, the Tbilisi War of December 1991 to January 1992, and anti-government protests in 2007 and 2011.
