What is the world of Spirit?

All cultures (other than the present-day, materialist cultures) have understood that beyond the visible, physical world there lies a world of spirit. This spirit world, often linked with ancestor worship, was where it was understood that some part of ourselves, which Christians refer to as the soul, goes to after death. However, what is less understood is the relationship between the living and the dead. Is communication possible? How does this concept fit in with notions of Heaven and Hell?
