Stabbing Suspect Shot by NYPD After He advanced toward Officers Armed with a Knife

On April 13, 2023, at approximately 1544 hours, Officer Front and Officer Poliey discharged four shots from their service firearms during a confrontation with a subject who brandied a knife. The subject was identified as Richard Moncrieffe 59-year-old male. The subject’s knife was recovered at the scene of the incident during this investigation.

On the date, at approximately 1540 hours, the subject was observed by civilian witnesses acting erratic and in possession of a knife. The subject was approached by the security guard of a church at which point the subject stabbed him in the torso. A witness who observed the incident called 9-1-1 to report it.

When the officers arrived, the subject was seated on the front steps of a church, still in possession of the knife. Officers shouted to the subject to drop the knife. The subject refused and instead, rose to his feet and began to charge at the officers. As a result, officers discharged their weapons. The subject was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
