Test your guitar strings right after changing them.

I always push the new strings to their limit by bending them as much as I can. This not only helps them settle in faster but also serves as a test. If one of the strings is defective and is going to break, I'd rather it break right away than later on when I'm playing live or working on one of my songs.

Having said that, I almost never experience a string breaking, even though I play with a sharpened metal pick.
