Have you ever had a sandwich that could take a bite out of you?

Well Kirk Hammett did. A deviled ham sandwich to be exact. Although he didn't eat it, because he had recently become a vegetarian before recording Metallica's Master of Puppets. The sandwhich had been thrown at him by someone in the crowd during a festival performance. The photograph on the back of the album provides visual proof that a sandwich did indeed take a bite out of Kirk Hammett.

"Ouch! This damn sandwich took a bite out of me!"

As the guitarist explains:

"The back cover shot of me, where I'm giving a dirty look to the camera? That was because, I had just become a vegetarian back then, and we were at the Donnington Festival; someone threw a deviled ham sandwich from the audience, and it f****** smashed right on my brand new black Jackson Flying V. And I was so f****** pissed! [Laughs] I looked over to the side, and I saw my guitar tech laughing, and I saw [photographer] Ross Halfin laughing, and I just gave them a dirty look, and then Ross took the shot. Which begs the question, did the person throw a deviled ham sandwich at Kirk Hammet because he was a vegetarian or was it because his last name is Hammett? I think both are equally plausible motivating factors.
