German President Left Waiting On Qatar Arrival

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was left waiting for 30 minutes of his 3-hour official visit to Qatar on Tuesday, because no official was present to receive him.

The red carpet was laid out next to the plane, a military guard was lined up, but Qatari Foreign Minister Sultan al-Muraichai was nowhere to be seen - leaving Steinmeier at the top of the stirs arms folded.

The reason for the delay has not been reported, but German media speculated the mix-up was a deliberate snub after German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock insisted last month that "countries like Qatar have a special responsiility... to put an end to this terrorism", referring to the Hamas-Israel war, while Steinmeier's tour of the region took two nights in Oman but only a flying visit to Qatar itself.
