ORGANIC MOLECULES DISCOVERED ON OSIRIS-REX | NASA DISCOVERED LIFE #trending #viral #jwst

On September 26, 2023, at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, scientists uncover the treasure brought back by the OSIRIS-REX mission.

Look at this! There's an unexpected layer of black dust on the avionics deck of the sample canister!

And the sample weighs 100 grams more than anticipated. How did this even happen?

Despite being securely sealed, mysterious black dust covered the interior and exterior of the canister, raising questions about its origin.

Now, let's take a look at the OSIRIS-REX mission launched in 2016, with three primary objectives.

NASA's goals were clear: sample collection, asteroid characterization, and Earth's Impact Hazard Assessment.

The spacecraft encountered challenges during sample collection but managed to secure a larger-than-expected sample from Bennu, totaling 300 grams.

During OSIRIS-REX’s touch-and-go maneuver on Bennu, a shockwave likely dispersed material, some of which found its way into the sample canister, mingling with the collected sample.

This explains the unexpected dust and debris found in the sample canister.

But why does it even matter, why NASA is going to those rocks, spending millions of dollars and wasting valuable time, just to get samples from them?

Well, the answer is simple, Asteroids, like Bennu, serve as time capsules, harboring crucial materials from the early solar system.

Back to the video, now.

So, why does it even matter to study asteroids like Bennu?
And the answer is this.

These samples might hold the key to understanding the origins of life!

Looking ahead, the OSIRIS-REX mission, now renamed OSIRIS-APEX, gears up to investigate asteroid Apophis in 2029.

NASA aims to study its composition, size, and shape to enhance our understanding of near-Earth objects and bolster Earth's defense against potential impacts.

And if you want to know, how The James Webb Space Telescope broke physics, watch this video up next.

Otherwise, take care and goodbye.
