American University's William Lawrence, speaking to Al Jazeera from Washington, DC, said that as the truce extension talks continue, there is an evident divide between Israel and the US on a return to war in Gaza.

"With Netanyahu publicly disagreeing with so much of what the Americans are saying are their red lines [on Gaza], Biden is going to be asserting himself diplomatically," Lawrence said.

"There is no question in my mind that a few members of the war cabinet would like to torpedo any deal, and would like to have torpedoed it from the beginning," he said.
