Narcissists and/or Co-morbid Narcissist/Borderlines attack, set-up, target and provoke (silent treatment withdrawal) attack and expect our empathy. All the while projecting their "stuff" all over us. Rage, gaslight, suck supply out of you, shove you in the rabbit hole and then act as if they care at all so you can be there for them. It's all ALWAYS all about them. You are damned if you do (give empathy) and damned if you don't. The only way out, is no contact whenever possible.
