Comfrey contains two major compounds called allantoin and rosmarinic acid. Allantoin makes the skin grow new cells faster, while rosmarinic acid helps relieve pain and inflammation. Another name for this plant is "knitbone" (not to be confused with boneset, which is a completely different herb). The reason why it was called knit bone is because it was used to help heal broken bones faster. And yes, there are many scientific studies that show just that. Pretty neat, huh?

World wide (except in the United States, of course) comfrey salves, oils and ointments are used for the treatment of bruises, sprains, strains, contusions, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, after surgeries, for general pain and inflammation, to heal broken bones, etc. You get the picture, right?
