Passive avoidance is a type of avoidance behavior that is demonstrated by withholding a behavior to prevent an aversive stimulus. For example, a rat in a chamber with a raised platform will refrain from stepping off the platform to prevent a foot shock1. Passive avoidance is achieved by the inhibition of a previously exhibited response. Procrastination, passive-aggressiveness, and rumination are examples of unhelpful coping mechanisms that we may consciously or unconsciously use to avoid tackling a tough issue or facing thoughts and feelings that are uncomfortable.
