Matt Harris is a professor of history at Colorado State University-Pueblo where he teaches race and religion, civil rights, church and state, Mormon history, American Religious history, and legal and constitutional history. He earned his BA and MA in history from BYU and his M.Phil and PhD, also in history, from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He has written or edited 9 books, including most recently Second-Class Saints: Black Mormons and the Struggle for Racial Equality, which Oxford University Press will publish in May 2024. It takes readers behind the scenes to show how President Kimball lifted the priesthood and temple ban and how the ban affected the church's core mission to take the gospel to every "kindred, nation, tongue and people." Harris also sits on the Board of Directors of the John Whitmer Historical Society, which brings together Restoration religions to discuss their shared interest in Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.
