Can You Tether A PlayStation Portal To a Cell Phone to Play?

Much like how every company seemed to be going after the Nintendo Wii in that generation of hardware, this generation it seems like everybody is trying to capture the lightning in a bottle that the Nintendo Switch has done. For years people have been expecting a follow-up to the PlayStation Vita from Sony, and in the summer of 2023, they announced a new handheld. Well not really. What they released was a streaming device compatible with the PlayStation 5 called the PlayStation Portal. As such I wondered if You Can Tether A PlayStation Portal To a Cell Phone to Play?

To finish my testing for the review of the PlayStation Portal, I took it with me one day to the office and connected it via my cellular hotspot. I have Verizon for my service and their 5G ultra-wideband service is available at the office. I found that I could connect to my phone without any major issues. I fired up Ratchet and Clank a Rift Apart for this test, and while there were a few times I got the warning that my network connectivity was slow it never disconnected during gameplay.

My overall experience was pretty positive, with only one brief moment of network connectivity warning before it cleared up. I was able to play through and around Ratchet and Clank without any issues, and it looked and played great. As a remote player, the PS Portal seemed to perform much better than I had feared based on what I had heard from friends with their experiences. This was something I thought was very important to know before you buy a PS Portal, so I am hoping this helped address some concerns in the community. When it comes to handheld gaming, Sony is hoping this will be widely adopted by PS5 owners, and as someone who has a PlayStation 5 since launch, I'm not sure how much I will use it.
