Trials of the Century, Ep. 3: Leopold & Loeb

In May of 1924, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb (ages 19 and 18, respectively, at the time) set out to prove their advanced intellect by committing the "perfect crime" when they kidnapped and murdered 14-year old Bobby Franks. Yet, as Robert Burns wrote in 1785: "The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men, Gang aft agley, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, For promis'd joy!" Grief and pain are exactly what Leopold and Loeb left in their wake, but did they deserve the death penalty for their actions? State's Attorney Robert Crowe certainly thought they did, but with Clarence Darrow standing in the breach and Judge John R. Caverly on the bench, would it happen?
