This work was published following Dickens' first trip to America. He visited many locations, including Virginia, Missouri, and New York. He enjoyed the city of Boston, which is where this celebratory dinner was held. It is a faithful account of the speeches made that evening.
In attendance at the dinner were Oliver Wendell Holmes, Washington Allston, George Bancroft, and Nathan Hale Jr among many noted literary figures.
