Original description:
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has used the Olenivka prison, located in Russian-occupied Donetsk Oblast, as a camp for prisoners of war and civilian hostages from Mariupol. Olenivka became notorious after the explosion, which happened on the night between July 28 and 29, 2022, killing 57 Ukrainian prisoners and injuring 130 more.

Thousands of Ukrainians, including servicemen from the Azov Brigade, have been held captive in its cells. Those who returned from captivity spoke about the inhumane conditions of detention, hunger, and torture in this prison.

The Kyiv Independent team collected information step by step about the functioning of the prison, as well as its guards, managers, and supervisors from Russia. In the end, the journalists were able to identify the people who were involved in the systematic abuse of the defenders of Mariupol.

The Kyiv Independent is almost entirely funded by our readers. Both investigations and high-quality video production demand substantial resources and are costly.
