The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BCE during the Greco-Persian Wars. A small Greek force, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, sought to defend the narrow pass of Thermopylae against the much larger Persian army, commanded by King Xerxes I. The Greeks, primarily Spartans and allies, held the pass for three days, displaying remarkable courage and skill in battle. However, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that allowed the Persians to outflank them. Recognizing their impending defeat, most Greek forces withdrew, while Leonidas and a small contingent of Spartans fought to the death. Despite the Greek loss, the Battle of Thermopylae had strategic importance, as it bought time for the Greeks to prepare for the eventual Persian defeat at the Battle of Plataea. The battle's heroic stand and sacrifice have become legendary in Western history and culture.
