Brian Banks was a promising high school football player with dreams of playing professionally until he was wrongfully convicted of rape at the age of 16. In 2002, he was accused of kidnapping and raping a classmate, which led to his arrest and subsequent plea deal after his lawyer advised him to plead no contest to avoid a potential 41-year-to-life sentence.

While serving six years in prison and five years on parole as a registered sex offender, Banks never lost hope of proving his innocence. His determination led to a turning point in 2011 when his accuser, Wanetta Gibson, was caught on tape admitting that the rape never happened and that she fabricated the story.

With the help of the California Innocence Project, Banks fought to clear his name. In 2012, his conviction was overturned, and he was exonerated. This pivotal moment allowed Banks to pursue his dream of playing professional football. Despite missing crucial years of training and competition, Banks received tryouts with several NFL teams, eventually signing with the Atlanta Falcons in 2013. Although his NFL career was short-lived, his story of resilience, perseverance, and justice has inspired many and brought attention to issues surrounding wrongful convictions and the challenges faced by exonerees rebuilding their lives post-prison. Since then, Banks has become an advocate for criminal justice reform and a motivational speaker, sharing his story to bring attention to the flaws in the legal system and the importance of second chances.
