New York's Adult Survivors Act, passed in 2019, amended the state's statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to seek legal recourse. This act allowed survivors who were previously barred by the statute of limitations from filing lawsuits due to their age to bring claims against their abusers and the institutions that may have harbored these abusers.

The Act created a one-year "look-back window" starting in August 2019, during which individuals, regardless of their age, were given the opportunity to file lawsuits against perpetrators or organizations responsible for their abuse, regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred. This look-back window aimed to provide justice and acknowledgment to survivors who had been previously time-barred from seeking legal action.

By extending the statute of limitations and creating this special legal window, the Adult Survivors Act aimed to empower survivors of childhood sexual abuse by providing them a chance to seek justice and hold perpetrators and institutions accountable for their actions, even years after the abuse took place.
