Con 3 ~ Conrad Schnitzler

'Con 3' (1981) captures Conrad Schnitzler in one of his oddest phases, toying with the parameters and conventions of the NDW sound rife in Berlin at the time. Working with drummer Wolfgang Sequenza at producer Peter Baumann's (Tangerine Dream) Paragon Studios, he arrived at a unique confection using his own lyrics and vocals (!) in German and English framed by neat rhythms and typically unresolved, pop-like melodies; heck, there's even a loungey vibraphone melody on 'Coca'! It's undoubtedly ahead of its time, discretely mixing avant-garde thought and tones with the "entertainment-driven nature of pop" to surreal and subtly jarring effect. Of the nine original tracks you simply must check out the strident, iced-out dub disco of 'Das Tier', the aforementioned 'Coca', and the pulsing sequencer funk of 'Komm Mit Nach Berlin', while the six bonus tracks gives up some ace moments like wheezing ambient jazz freeforms of 'Con 3.3', the spiky dance rhythms of 'Con 3.4' and some cracking alternative versions.
