Highly recommend “Pockets, a Hidden History of Women’s Lives” for a good history of the garment. It’s incredibly well researched and comprehensive. It does focus a little more on the 18th C than the 19th, but there’s plenty of info on 1800s pockets as well.
Most of my late Victorian garments have a pocket that looks almost exactly like an 18th c tie on pocket. It just happens to be sewn to the garment instead of, ya know, tied on!
