Wool and Linen Mixed — The Nephilim Problem

What does it mean in Leviticus 19:19 and Deuteronomy 22:11 that the Israelites were not supposed to wear garments that mixed wool and linen? Was this a stand-alone command that is based on scientific or pragmatic considerations? Or is it to be understood on the basis of a much broader spiritual problem — the nephilim problem?
