Dumb Money was a tough watch for me because to this day (and to my deep shame) I’m a diamond handed ape, so reliving the 2021 GameStop saga meant I had a pit in my stomach from beginning to end.

Of course one can’t help but compare this to the other comedic, “stick it to those wall street bastards” film: The Big Short. But the core difference is that the characters in The Big Short were primary players in the story of the 2008 financial crisis whereas the GME saga involved millions of individuals (known as apes) all banded together across the globe following the lead of a hilarious madman named Roaring Kitty, AKA Keith Gill.

Unfortunately, this movie chose to tell the story of a select few of those apes where it should have just been the Keith Gill vs Wall Street movie coupled with random people around the world interacting with them on Reddit and Youtube.

On top of that the film is way too immature for its own good. For a movie telling a true story, everyone behaves like they’re in a mid-2000’s Judd Apatow film. This is precisely how Wall Street Bets of Reddit should have been characterized, not every character in the film.

In total, this movie manages to take one of the wildest stories in history and suck most of the meaning and fun out of it by bypassing important events yet emphasizing unfunny moments with characters that we don’t care about, and then pissing me off by showing them showing off their paper hands while Tik Tok dancing.
