The game was released 1991. I remember it well. You can play with anywhere from two to eight players, any they can be any combination of human and CPU (that means they can all even be CPU players). I remember with a controller splitter (2-4), you can connect four controllers and four human players can play. I do not know if there was a technology for the NES that allowed more than four controllers to be connected. Technically, you only needed one controller to play this game and everyone take turns.
The AI used to program the CPU players can easily be manipulated. I show how to do so in this video when I play against three CPU players.
