CAPE CORAL, FLA -- A high school teacher lost everything when her home went up in flames. Dianna Quay's generator exploded the day after Hurricane Irma hit. The fire left her and her son without a place to live. "I didn't even have a pair of shoes," said Quay, who has taught at Cape Coral High School for the past seventeen years. "I lost them when I was running out of the house," she added. Cape Coral High School students found out about Quay's loss when they saw a go fund me page online. Mia Glickman is one of Quay's students. She decided to host a 5 kilometer charity run to help her beloved teacher. "The day we went back to school I went to the principal's office and said this is what I want to do," said the high school senior. "He said, 'Okay let's run with it, I trust you'," Glickman added. Glickman then wanted to tell Quay about 'Relay for Quay' in person. "I actually was the one to tell her and I wasn't expecting her to cry because she's a tough cookie," said Glickman. "I knew when she cried, I was doing the right thing," she added. Quay was touched by the outpouring of affection her students have shown. "I'm just overwhelmed with the love and support they are showing," she said. Quay is looking forward to Saturday's run. As long as she doesn't have to lace up a pair of sneakers. "Already told them that I"m not running I will walk," said Quay. "Ms. Quay does not run," she added while laughing. Mia Glickman already planned for a way to clear this hurdle. She plans on having Quay ride in a golf cart ahead of the runners. "Momma Quay is going to sit on the back of it like it's a throne," said Glickman. "She's going to be waving at everyone running in her honor," she added. 'Relay for Quay' will be Saturday November 18th at 8 in the morning. Registration costs $10 and all the proceeds will go to Quay.
