After years of wanting to attend, I've finally made it to the RC Monster Truck World Finals down at Grave Digger's Dungeon. Yesterday was the qualifying and it was a long day because there are so many trucks registered for it this year - over 600 trucks. My boys and I rolled in late Thursday night to set up camp and avoid possible traffic from the Memorial Day weekend crowd that loves to go to OBX. It had rained really hard that evening before we left and we arrived to swamp-like conditions. After talking to a bunch of people and being told we couldn't park in a few spots, we finally braved the muddy open field and hoped we didn't get stuck (but if we did get stuck...there'd definitely be something there that could pull us out) :)

Turns out that we ended up with one of the best spots on the grounds and our RV door opened right up to a close view of the track. So when the awning was out, we had a great "pit" area to work on cars but keep watching the action. It was also in front of the speaker, so we heard all the action...when the mobs of generators weren't running. I've never run any of my RCs in a race. So this was my first time racing and working as a corner marshal. I honestly didn't do either very well. because the track ran each lane multiple ways, it was definitely a trickier first time to race and marshal.

Qualifying started late because the track was still wet Friday morning after the rain on Thursday. Qualifying didn't finish even though they ran it until almost midnight. Saturday didn't start with the urgency I thought it would with a lot of qualifying left to do before the races could begin. In the end, racing didn't start until 3pm and had to finish on Sunday because heavy rain meant that racing had to stop around 10pm.

In the end, we had a great time hanging out with fellow RCers and trying out racing for the first time. Not sure it is my thing....but I hope to be back to do the Freestyle event. That is more up my alley. :)
