Converting metric tire size (285/70/17) to inches:
285 / 25.4 = 11.22 (Tire width in metric / 25.4 = width converted to inches)
11.22 x .70 = 7.854 (Tire width x .70 = 70 percent of the tire width, which is also the sidewall height from rim to top of tread)
7.854 + 7.854 + 17 = 32.7 (Sidewall top + sidewall bottom + rim height = tire height in inches)
