You may have heard that laughter is the best medicine. And for those who doubt whether this popular belief is true or false, know that science supports the notion that smiling can provide physical and mental benefits. This is due to bodily reactions such as the release of endorphins, a natural substance produced by the brain and directly linked to a series of beneficial processes in our body. One way to release endorphins is through muscle movement, and these movements can range from strenuous exercise to laughter. The movement of the face, nerves and adjacent areas when exposing the teeth is enough to produce this substance in small doses, in addition to increasing blood flow and reducing physical stress. There are also psychological aspects to smiling – with benefits related to feelings about your own personality and the receptivity of the people around you. Amid the responsibilities and obstacles of everyday life, it is common for a pleasant sense of humor to falter and laughter to sometimes become rare. But it's important not to take widespread disappointment for granted and try to smile as much as possible. There is no doubt that smiling can bring many health benefits, both physical and mental.
