El periodista: Jamal Khashoggi, vivía exiliado en Estados Unidos desde 2017. En 2018, Khashoggi acudió a la misión diplomática Saudí en Estambul para recoger unos documentos necesarios para casarse con su novia, de nacionalidad turca, un trámite completamente rutinario. Ella le esperaba fuera del edificio, del que nunca salió. Khashoggi había acudido días antes al mismo consulado, el 28 de septiembre, para obtener el certificado de divorcio de su exmujer; entonces, se le pidió que regresara después. La cita estaba fijada, tal y como recoge la cadena BBC, para el día 2 de octubre a las 13:30.
El Saudí llegó al consulado 16 minutos antes de la hora de la cita. Un informe difundido por el: "Wall Street Journal" sobre la desaparición y asesinato del periodista: Jamal Khashoggi a manos de 15 agentes quienes tardaron sólo 7 minutos para descuartizarlo vivo. El mismo día que Khashoggi entró por última vez al consulado, con una cita programada previamente, aterrizaba en Turquía una delegación de 15 Saudíes en dos aviones. El equipo visitó el consulado el mismo día que el periodista fue visto por última vez y poco después regresó a Arabia Saudí. El diario turco "Sabah" publicó la lista de estos 15 hombres y a los que ya señalaba como presuntos culpables. Según el mismo diario, uno de los 15 agentes Saudíes era un experto forense en la agencia de seguridad interna de Riad; otro, un teniente de la Fuerza Aérea del reino. En resumen: todos ellos trabajaban para el Gobierno Saudí, tal y como recoge el "The New York Times". El consulado estaba intervenido con micrófonos del servicio de inteligencia turco, por lo que todo fue grabado: La planificación para matarlo y la ejecución. Las escuchas de las cintas grabadas, sólo dos personas hablaron en esclusiva con el programa: "Panorama de la BBC".
Khashoggi trabajaba para el diario estadounidense: "The Washington Post", en donde escribió 20 incisivas columnas durante el año anterior a su muerte. El periodista tenía 59 años.
