The Holocaust was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany, aided by its collaborators, systematically murdered some six million European Jews, around two-thirds of the Jewish population of Europe, as part of a larger event involving the persecution and murder of other groups, including some two million ethnic Poles, millions of Soviet citizens (mostly ethnic Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians), and millions of other ethnic groups, including the Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, homosexuals, and people with disabilities. Jews were targeted for extermination as part of a larger event involving the persecution and murder of other groups, including some two million ethnic Poles, millions of Soviet citizens (mostly ethnic Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians), and millions of other ethnic groups, including the Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, homosexuals, and people with disabilities.

The Holocaust was the culmination of centuries of antisemitism and persecution of Jews in Europe. In the 1930s, the Nazi Party, led by Adolf Hitler, rose to power in Germany and began to implement its ideology of racial superiority, which placed Jews at the bottom of the racial hierarchy. The Nazis believed that Jews were a threat to the purity of the Aryan race and that they needed to be eliminated.

The Holocaust was carried out in two main phases. The first phase, which began in 1941, involved the mass murder of Jews by mobile killing units called Einsatzgruppen. These units shot Jews in mass executions or gassed them in mobile gas vans. The second phase, which began in 1942, involved the deportation of Jews to concentration camps, where they were subjected to forced labor, starvation, and mass murder. The most notorious concentration camp was Auschwitz-Birkenau, where over one million Jews were murdered.

The Holocaust was a major tragedy in human history. It is a reminder of the dangers of hatred, intolerance, and discrimination.
