Final Fantasy XIII takes place in the captivating world of Gran Pulse, also known as Pulse. The heart of the narrative revolves around Cocoon, an immense artificial sphere that hovers above the surface of Pulse and is governed by the Sanctum, a theocratic regime.

These two realms are under the dominion of fal'Cie, extraordinary mechanized beings possessing god-like abilities. The Cocoon fal'Cie bear the responsibility of sustaining the floating existence of Cocoon, as well as providing essential resources such as light and water for its inhabitants. Each fal'Cie is assigned a specific role to fulfill within this intricate system.

Remarkably, the fal'Cie possess the power to designate humans residing in both Pulse and Cocoon as their servitors. These individuals, referred to as l'Cie, are marked with a symbol representing either Pulse or Cocoon and bestowed with a unique "Focus" or mission to accomplish.

Should the l'Cie succeed in fulfilling their task within the allotted time frame, they undergo a transformative process and crystallize, granting them the fabled gift of eternal life. Conversely, failure to complete their Focus condemns them to a tragic fate as mindless creatures known as Cie'th. Interestingly, the l'Cie are not explicitly informed of their specific Focus; instead, they receive enigmatic visions that necessitate interpretation and understanding.

In the chronicles predating the game's events by several centuries, an epic clash known as the War of Transgression unfolded between the domains of Pulse and Cocoon. In the heat of battle, l'Cie hailing from Pulse launched a fierce assault, tearing a substantial rift in Cocoon's protective barrier. Eventually, these l'Cie fulfilled their enigmatic Focus and underwent a crystalline metamorphosis.

The breach in Cocoon's defenses was subsequently mended using materials sourced from Pulse, instilling a lasting apprehension among Cocoon's populace, who dwell in ceaseless trepidation of another invasion. This pervasive fear is skillfully exploited by the Sanctum to maintain their grip on power.

The Sanctum exercises authority over two formidable military branches: the Guardian Corps, entrusted with upholding order within the confines of Cocoon, and the Public Security and Intelligence Command (PSICOM), an elite force specifically tasked with neutralizing any potential threats originating from Pulse.

Bestowed with advanced technology by the fal'Cie, Cocoon's denizens enjoy the privileges of flying airships and mechanical entities. Furthermore, a form of mystic arts known as magic exists within this realm, typically accessible solely to l'Cie, fal'Cie, and the diverse array of creatures inhabiting both Cocoon and Pulse. Nevertheless, through the utilization of Manadrives, ordinary humans can harness distilled chemical variants of this arcane power.
