USS Salamaua - CVE-96 (Escort Carrier)

USS Salamaua (CVE-96) was a Casablanca-class escort carrier in World War II, named after the village of Salamaua in New Guinea. Measuring 512 feet in length and equipped with two reciprocating steam engines, she could reach 19 knots. During the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf, a kamikaze attack damaged her, resulting in casualties. Post-war, she participated in Operation Magic Carpet, bringing servicemen home. In 1946, she was decommissioned and scrapped in 1947.
