After the West posed sanctions on Russia, many Western airlines canceled flights to and from Russia. But the Chinese airlines didn't. The Western sanctions have also prevented Russian carriers from importing airplane parts and buying new ones. The Russians were so desperate that they confiscated dozens of Chinese aircraft in Russia. Many of the Chinese aircraft are owned by Bank of China Aviation, the bank's leasing subsidiary. The Russians seized 17 of the bank's airplanes worth $800M.
