Turkey (bird)
The turkey is a large bird of the genus Meleagris, native to North America. There are two extant species of turkey: the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) in eastern and central North America and the turkey (Meleagris ocellata) in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Males of both types of turkeys have a distinctive insect called a snood that hangs from the top of the beak. They are among the largest birds in their range. As with many large, ground-feeding birds (order Galliformes), the male is larger and more colorful than the female.

Male blue-headed turkey (Meleagris ocellata)
The first turkeys evolved in North America more than 20 million years ago. They share a modern common ancestor with grouse, pheasants, and other birds. The wild turkey species is the ancestor of the domestic turkey, which was domesticated about 2,000 years ago.
