Thief in the Night — Rapture or Armageddon?

In 1 Thess. 5:2 we read that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. In Matt. 24:43-44 we read that the coming of the Son of Man will be like a thief breaking in. What do these passages mean? Do they refer to the rapture of the church? Do they refer to the second coming and Armageddon?
