Cemetery that inspired the movie COCO 🇲🇽 DAY OF DEAD - Day of the DEAD

San Andres Mixquic, once an island on Lake Chalco has long held a tradition dating back to their ancient ancestors of Tenochitlan, the Aztec civilization. In more recent years gained much popularity from a children's movie called "COCO" and based off the traditions held November first and second at the cemetery in town. Many visitors from country and international come to watch the "Alumbrada" at the cemetery were the community's main church glows from thousands of candles and smoke from copal incense being burned all over the cemetery. The tradition itself is dedicated to a day of remembrance for the loved one's who have passed away, lighting a candle for all those who have gone at the altar. It is believed spiritually on this day the souls of those gone are guided back during the darkest days of the year in winter solstice. There for, tombs are well cleaned, gifts are brought from flowers to food and drinks. A day not of sadness but instead of the granted time the individual was present, I highly recommend if you have a chance to visit during this time of year here you will not leave disappointed.
