It has been a gathering place for Mexicans since Aztec times, the Zócalo (sokalo) is the common name of the main square in central Mexico City. Prior to the colonial period, was the site of Mexican ceremonies and now for the swearing-in of viceroys, royal proclamations, military parades, Independence ceremonies, and modern religious events like Holy Week. Today, and day or night there is no shortage of crowds walking around, vendors selling food, souvenir's or offering services.
