What Does St Anger Mean?

What does St Christopher have to do with Metallica? Not much. Other than the fact that James Hetfield once saw guitarist Kirk Hammett wearing a St Christopher's medallion on his necklace. Known as the Patron Saint of Traveller's, a St Christopher's medallion may be given to someone to wish them luck in their travels. This particular medallion worn by Kirk featured a surfer on the flip side of the medallion, which symbolized to Kirk "good blessings" while he was surfing.

As James looked at Kirk's medallion, he invented a Patron Saint of his own; "St Anger." A patron saint who guides James Hetfield to use his anger productively, such as channeled through his music. Rather than destructively, such as drinking. The band enjoyed the concept so much that they decided to title their 8th studio album St Anger.

As Kirk explains;
