This Chicken Coop In Boise, Idaho Is Out Of This World

When you are a heavyweight sci-fi nerd, you want to show it everywhere. UFO shaped soaps, tin-foil-covered everything, weird alien-looking clothing, so why not some yard decorations to really make your obsession be seen easily from space? That is exactly what Brett Wilson and Ellen DeAngelis did with their chicken coop.

The couple happens to raise chickens in the backyard of their Boise, Idaho home, where they’ve built a small house for their growing flock of fowl. But this coop is no garden-variety - they repurposed two 10-foot satellite dishes from Craigslist to make it look like a functioning UFO!

They showed the whole project from start to finish on BackYard chickens, an online hub for people who grow and raise their own fowl. They outfitted the dishes with 1-inch Styrofoam insulation to create a “climate-controlled environment," allowing the chickens to brave Idaho's unfathomably harsh winters. They coated it in classic UFO color, i.e. aluminium paint and sat the structure atop an eight-foot trampoline base. The blinking LED lights that make the thing look like it is in idle mode, waiting for its pilot, add the finishing touch.

The couple never expected the clip of the coop to reach viral fame, but they say it feels fantastic to get such positive feedback from all over the world. For their next step, they plan on adding lights inside, to encourage egg laying during the winter months.
