Designed by R.J. Mitchell as a high-performance interceptor, the Spitfire first took to the skies in 1936 and would go on to become one of the most iconic COMBAT AIRCTAFT in history. With high rates of climb combined with high-manoeuvrability, RAF Spitfires soon became a force to be reckoned with in the skies above Europe. However, and despite serving with numerous allied air forces in combat theatres across the globe, the Supermarine Spitfire is perhaps best known for its pivotal role in the Battle of Britain. In the summer of 1940, alongside the famous Hawker Hurricane, these classic British fighters formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command during the tumultuous months of the battle, leading to victory over the Luftwaffe by summer’s end. To celebrate this legendary WW2 WARBIRD, today’s aviation art release depicts a Royal Air Force Spitfire in another of its famous battles – banking hard above the sea during the Battle of Malta. Enjoy!
