Bay Bridge is shut down by protesters during APEC summit

Pro-Palestine protesters orchestrated a blockade on the eastern span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge during rush hour, aiming to draw attention to the Gaza conflict and urging global leaders, including President Joe Biden, to act for a ceasefire. Organized by the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC), the demonstration echoed their earlier protest at the Port of Oakland. Hundreds gathered, causing traffic disruption and prompting a response from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Riot gear-clad officers surrounded the protesters, urging their dispersal while planning for potential arrests. Despite some lane closures for APEC Summit preparation, the CHP admitted difficulty in anticipating the protest's precise location. This well-coordinated demonstration caused significant traffic impacts, leading authorities to advise commuters to check travel resources before hitting the road.
