Former US Football player Carli Lloyd talks about why she stood up at the Tokyo Summer Olympic Gamers, unlike her teammates who took a knee instead.
Carli Lloyd, has been known for two two-time World championships, two Olympic gold medals, and has been FIFA player of the year before. She retired in 2021 after the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Carli explains that the US Womens' team had been taking a knee every match (the knee which is a move that American Football player Coin Kaepernick came up with to support Black Lives Matter and against the US National Anthem), even in the English League, but since the Olympics was her last game, she wanted to stand up instead.
Carli said that she was tired of the kneeling, and wanted to make a change.
She said that she had an argument with teammate Megan Rapinoe back in 2016, calling the kneeling "a distraction" for the matches against other teams. She explains that this was all Megan Painoe getting all the attention for kneeling for no reason instead of focusing on getting ready for the game. There was also no explanation behind why Megan was suddenly kneeling pre-match.
This year's match, Carli criticized the US Womens' team for not taking the football matches seriously after the team was caught dancing right after losing to Team Portugal 0-0. the Portugal team kept on blocking any scores from the US team from happening.
Carli says that Team USA has become a team that expects to win matches without knowing about the risks, and instead get beaten by other country teams for looking vulnerable.
Back in 2021, Team Canada beat Team USA in a match, While Team USA was so focused on kneeling and the Black Lives Matter agenda, Team Canada was focused on beating their neighbor country in a game of football, and won.
It's important to focus on the sport you trained hard for, and represent your regional, provincial/state, or your country in a sport, and not bring political agendas into it. Otherwise it makes your team look weak, and the opposing team break your barriers.
