Hyde Creek is located in the City of Port Coquitlam British Columbia. Port Coquitlam is in the outskirts of Vancouver British Columbia, approximately a short 30 minute, 18 mile, drive from Vancouver's city center and is nestled at the foot of Burke Mountain. Port Coquitlam sits at the confluence of the Fraser River and the Pitt River. During the early part of November, the coho and chum salmon return to Hyde Creek to spawn (lay eggs) in the gravel beds to carry on future salmon numbers. Salmon have a lifespan of three to eight years. Salmon are a kind of “super fish” that can live in both fresh water and salt water, and might travel hundreds or even thousands of miles over a lifetime! Salmon are born in fresh water and most live their adult lives in the ocean. Then they make an incredible upstream journey to spawn (lay eggs) in the same places that they were hatched. Here we see the struggles these salmon make in order to carry on their lives meaning, to create future salmon stocks. Along with battling challenges in the oceans and streams, they also battle to survive predators as you see in this video. In the end it is all part of Mother Nature.....SURVIVAL.

We also see this mama Black Bear teaching her cubs to survive, in searching out their food and being able to catch it. This time of year, late fall, is when the bears begin to prepare for winter hibernation so eating well to build fat is extremely important to survive the winters cold when food is scarce. During hibernation they will use up this extra body fat to live off of while not losing any muscle. This allows the bear to come out of hibernation thinner and still as strong as it was before winter. This was an amazing event to watch this mama teaching her cubs the proper way to catch salmon and to see these animals in an uncontrolled environment. While recording this footage Brent and Elsa were within 30 feet of the adult bear at times. Mama did not seem at all disrupted with the human presence at this location, of which there were numerous. This is a very well known location to observe this incredible part of the animal world. Enjoy and please share this video!
