Super Mario Sunshine Playthrough (Progressive Scan Mode) - Part 1

This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube. I'm playing the game in progressive scan mode using an actual GameCube (not the Wii). I'm collecting all 120 shine sprites in the game.

I picked up Super Mario Sunshine back on its release date in 2002. I had to wait six long years for a successor to Super Mario 64 even though Nintendo had talked about a Super Mario 64 2 and even a Super Mario 128. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the new 3D Mario game.

However, Super Mario Sunshine ultimately turned out to be a bit disappointing. The basic waterpack idea was alright, but the game generally devolved into a massive collectathon, similar to Donkey Kong 64. The blue coins in particular were difficult to keep track of and not all that fun to collect. At times they could be downright irritating.

The levels themselves weren't that impressive either. None of the areas matched the magic or inspiration of worlds like Bob-omb Battlefield or Jolly Roger Bay. The ending with Corona Mountain also felt half-assed, like the development team was rushing to finish the game.

I actually found that the best parts of the game were when Shadow Mario took away the waterpack and you had to traverse those crazy 3D obstacle courses. I wish the game had been designed more around that concept and not so much of the collectahon gameplay. It was nice to see Yoshi finally return though.

This is possibly my least favorite 3D Mario game, although Super Mario 3D World gets on my nerves at times (mostly because of camera and control issues). Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the new footage.
