In the first half of the fifties, the very popular competitions reserved for cars in the Sports category, with displacements of up to 2,000 cm³, had witnessed the heated confrontation between Maserati and Ferrari which, in 1954 and '55, turned in favor of the Maserati A6 GCS, often victorious in the Ferrari 500 Mondial.

To interrupt Maserati's dominance, towards mid-1955 Enzo Ferrari commissioned Vittorio Jano to create a new model, carrying out a complete update of the "Mondial" and a careful revision of the four-cylinder in-line engine designed by Aurelio Lampredi for the "500 F2" .
