Through Boeing's ecoDemonstrator project, NASA partnered with partners in October 2023 to provide vital new data on sustainable aviation fuel. In this video, equipment that will measure pollutants and contrail particles from conventional jet gasoline and sustainable aviation fuel used by Boeing's second ecoDemonstrator aircraft are transferred into NASA Armstrong's DC-8 aircraft.
Located in Edwards, California, at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Centre, the DC-8 is the world's biggest flying research laboratory. Our knowledge of how sustainable aviation fuel impacts contrails—which trap heat in the atmosphere—will grow thanks to the data it gathered. Partners including GE, the German Aerospace Centre, World Energy, and the Federal Aviation Administration teamed forces with NASA and Boeing.
