In 1998 a mysterious series of messages appeared online and a strange fax sent to Art Bell on Coast to Coast AM touched off a firestorm of controversy around time travel. A user calling himself John Titor claimed to be a time traveler from the year 2036 and provided proof of his time displacement equipment. The most mysterious part is that he vanished not long after penning a goodbye letter with a cryptic message.
