Imran Khan Cricket hero turned politician, he struggled for 26 years to fulfil his dream of becoming Pakistan's Prime Minister to transform the corruption pretentious country into an Islamic welfare state. The 72-year-old colorful former captain, designated as one of Pakistan's greatest cricketers who changed his shaky team into champions in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, appeared as an inspiring leader in politics too
The Oxford-educated Pashtun launched Tehreek-e-Insaf, which means the movement for justice, in 1996.
Mr. Khan can point to some successes.
Pakistan's Covid record has been the best in South Asia, and a poverty-alleviation program made progress. He has also provided universal healthcare in two provinces - perhaps his most notable achievement. While this could help Mr. Khan in elections due by late this year, all eyes are on the corruption allegations against him. A conviction could disqualify him from running for public office, possibly for life.
