His father, Reginald, was a merchant, and his mother, Mabel, was a devout woman who raised him to have a deep faith in God. Edmund had two sisters and at least one brother.
Edmund was a brilliant student and attended the University of Oxford, where he studied mathematics, dialectics, and theology. He was also a popular preacher and spent many years traveling throughout England, engaging in spiritual exercises.
Career as a scholar and priest
After completing his studies at Oxford, Edmund went to Paris to continue his education. He became a renowned scholar and lecturer, teaching at both Oxford and Paris. He was also a spiritual advisor to many people, including King Henry III of England.

Edmund of Abingdon as Archbishop of Canterbury

Edmund clashed with King Henry III on several occasions, most notably over the issue of royal taxation of the clergy. He also criticized the king's continental policies.
Edmund's outspokenness made him unpopular with some people, but he was also deeply respected for his integrity and courage. He died on November 16, 1240, in Soisy, France. He was canonized by Pope Innocent IV in 1246.
